Christian’s movement pulled Tommy’s attention from his computer. He wasn’t getting anything from the files anyway. Sometimes detectives and agents missed things the first go-around, but the mind kept working even when the consciousness had moved to something else. Sometimes, when Tommy went back, he saw something new.

Not this time, though.

“Are you okay?”

Christian blinked slowly before straightening up in his chair.

“No. My mind is like a computer file that’s got a virus in it.”

Tommy shook his head, unable to smile as he normally might when Christian said such ludicrous things. There weren’t any smiles inside Tommy right now.

“So, basically, we’re right where we started.”

“We need to watch the Goleen murder,” Christian said as if Tommy hadn’t already seen it. “You have the video on your computer?”

“I’ve watched it ten times, Christian. Others have scoured it. There’s nothing to see. The room is nondescript, all you can tell is that it’s some kind of storage unit. Even the instruments used, ropes and pulleys, they can be bought anywhere.”

“I need to watch it again. If you don’t want to, fine, but I don’t have it on my computer.”

Tommy was quiet for a moment. He knew Christian’s modus operandi. He nearly had a fetish for being around crime scenes. If Tommy didn’t know him, he’d think the kid got off on it. However, Christian remained near them so long, and with so much interest, because it allowed his mind to do what others couldn’t.

Yet, he hadn’t watched the video more than once?

“Why?”

“Why what?” Christian said.

“Why haven’t you watched it more?”

“Because I didn’t want to.”

“That’s not enough,” Tommy said. “You’re here because of your abilities. If you’re blatantly not using them, that’s a dereliction of duty. Why didn’t you watch it?”

“Because I killed him!” Christian shouted. “He died because of me, just like Bradley’s mom!”

Tears rested in the kid’s eyes. After about a minute, filled with silence while Christian wiped his face, Tommy said, “Okay. Pull your chair over here and let’s watch it.”

It took a few seconds for Tommy to pull up the video and play it. He kept it moving at five times the original pace, speeding through the time where the man hung alone.

“Slow it down.”

They both watched the killer crack Goleen’s kneecaps. His screams filled the metal room, as well as Tommy’s office.

Tommy sped it up again.

“Now. Stop.”

Tommy went to normal speed and they watched Ryan Goleen emit his last gasp, a short sucking of air as he tried to pull himself upward using his dislocated shoulders. Then his head sagged against his chest. His eyes were still open, staring down at a floor that he no longer saw.

“Send me the file.”

“Okay,” Tommy whispered.

“I’ll see you in the morning,” Christian said.

“You going home?”

“Yes.”

With that, Christian got up from the chair and left the building. Tommy looked back at his computer screen and where Ryan Goleen was still hanging, his torture finally finished.
